Is a stand-up sunbed stronger than a lay-down bed?

You should not assume that every stand-up sunbed is stronger or that every lay-down bed requires the same amount of time.

Equipment differs by model, lamp configuration, maintenance and permitted exposure schedule. Advice based on a different salon's machine or a video on social media may not apply to the equipment you are using.

The right session length must be based on your skin, experience and the particular sunbed. Never transfer a session time from one machine to another without asking for guidance.

Which option gives the most even result?

Both formats are designed to provide full-body exposure when used correctly, but your position can influence your personal experience.

In the stand-up booth, there is no pressure from lying against a bed. You can also position your arms slightly away from your sides, following the salon's instructions.

In a lay-down bed, small areas resting against the acrylic may receive exposure differently because of your position and pressure. Changing position without clear instructions is not recommended, however, as doing so could interfere with correct use of the equipment.

No format can guarantee a perfectly even result. Natural skin tone, existing pigmentation, clothing lines and how different areas of your skin respond will all make a difference.

Which one is more comfortable?

Comfort is completely personal.

Some customers love lying back with the AquaCool mist and their own music playing through the megaSun K7 sound system. Others feel more comfortable standing inside the spacious Hapro Luxura V8.

If you experience claustrophobia, limited mobility or discomfort when standing or lying down, tell the team before your session. They can explain how each unit opens and operates so that you can make an informed choice.

Is the stand-up option more hygienic?

Both stand-up and lay-down equipment should be cleaned and maintained correctly.

A stand-up booth reduces contact between most of your body and the equipment, but you will still touch areas such as the floor, handles or controls. A professionally cleaned lay-down bed is also prepared between customers.

Choose according to your preferred position, rather than assuming that one format removes the need for proper hygiene.

Do the same safety rules apply to both?

Yes. Both types emit ultraviolet radiation.

Whichever style you choose:

• You must be aged 18 or over
• Approved protective eyewear must be worn
• You should follow the guidance given for your skin and the equipment
• Never exceed the recommended exposure time
• Do not use a sunbed on red, sore, irritated or sunburnt skin
• Check medication and skincare for photosensitivity warnings
• Do not use tanning lotion as a reason to increase your session
• Stop using the equipment and seek assistance if you feel unwell

UK health organisations warn that UV tanning damages the skin and increases the risk of skin cancer. A stand-up booth is not safer than a lay-down bed simply because it looks or feels different.
